Easy Ways to Live Greener This Summer

recycling symbol Living greener is a hot topic, and here at General Heating and Air Conditioning, we’ve compiled some easy tips for you to live greener without a lot of work on your part.

Compost, Compost, Compost – Add a second garbage bin at your house: one for compost. What can you compost? Just about any food waste, such as vegetable scraps, fruit waste, or teabags, and also other items like grass cuttings or weeds you have pulled. Not only is compost a green practice, but it can also double as fertilizer for your garden or flower beds once it breaks down.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – Work on making recycling a habit and a normal part of your life. You can recycle the “normal” products, such as plastics and paper, in your recycling bin, but also consider how you dispose of old items you don’t need any more. For example, old clothes can be donated to a thrift shop, and old books can be donated to a school, library, or shelter. Everything has another use, so try your best to live greener this way.

Plant a Garden – It’s not too late to plant a garden this summer! Not only does this allow your yard to be used a greener fashion, but you also get to provide food for yourself. Pick out the vegetables you like best, and even fertilize it with compost, and by the end of the summer, you’ll have a variety of tasty vegetables.

Raise the Temperature – Raise the temperature on your thermostat when you are not home or while you are sleeping by a few degrees. This cuts down on cost, saving you money while you live greener.

Make Use of Windows – Windows help block heat out during the morning and throughout the day, and when things get cooler in the evening, they can also let cooler air in. This helps give your air conditioner a break from the constant work and will help you cut costs.
